Make It Happen book by Jerry Jemmott

The book which  I began to write in June of 2016 was published with the help of so many great  sponsors on May 22nd, 2023 as “Make It Happen”. Our heartfelt thanks to you all.

Loved the book. Amazing life!!!

After reading Jerry Jemmott’s new book, “Make It Happen” I’m struck by his honesty, his humanity, and his laser focus on music. During his early years, he clearly could not focus in school. As he stumbled through his early years, he found music. Specifically, he found the bass. For some reason, Jerry was able to concentrate for the first time in his life. He threw himself into learning the bass. First, he learned the upright bass then, after a number of years, he transitioned to the electric bass. He saw this as the future of Rhythm ‘n Blues. (Interestingly, he hated the sound of the electric bass when he first heard it.) Overall, I think that “Make It Happen”, is a story about persistence, perseverance, and excellence. There were also multiple times when Jerry could've easily given up. Times were too rough.

The bad breaks were piling up on him. Lovers were walking out on him.

The drug abuse was overwhelming him. Yet, somehow, through personal resilience, his Buddhist faith, and his music, Jerry was able to come out the other side better and perhaps stronger. I am honored and humbled to write a few words regarding Jerry’s new book. I'm not a legendary bass player. I'm not even a musician. I'm a trauma surgeon. A trauma surgeon who loves music.  I had the good fortune of interviewing Jerry Jemmott for a podcast that I do with Larry Fulcher (who is also a legendary bass player).  This is a fascinating read about an extraordinary musician who, now in his late 70s, is still going strong. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
